"We’ve been lazy and we know this." - Sean
Radicus are a 5-piece melodic punk band from Peterborough, we had them play Manchester with Sweet Empire in February and they shredded. I sent Sean a few questions that he was nice enough to answer for me!
So, for those unfamiliar with Radicus, what's the back-story?
I think we started out in 2004; we were 5 school friends with roughly the same taste in skate punk who enjoyed playing a few covers then started writing our own songs. We’ve evolved over the years, and have found a writing style now that we’re happy with and we think sounds pretty good. This release is actually the 4th e.p, and is easily the best (I wouldn’t go looking for the others), we feel that the songs we’ve recently written are our best work and what we’re working on at the moment is sounding just as good to us if not better.
How many bass players have you had?
We’re on our 4th, Kevin “Bobby Bolivia” Bull. We parted ways with our original Bassist Harty back in 2005 and recruited Ryan from WAF as our second. This was only supposed to be short term due to him being committed to WAF but it lasted a couple of years and its his bass playing that you can hear on tracks 5 – 8 on the Bigger noise. After recording “The Big Noise” we had Scowley play a few live shows with us but this was only temporary due to him moving to Scotland . Now we’ve found Boliv, things are awesome it seems like he’s been in the band since day 1.
Your 8-track mini album has just come out on Disconnect Disconnect Records, been a long time in the making?
Yeah it has. The first 4 tracks were recorded in April 2010 and were released digitally as ‘The Big Noise’, and the 2nd 4 tracks are tracks we have recorded at different times and never officially released them on a CD. Some of them are now a couple of years old and we have been playing them for a while but we wanted to get them on an official release.
How did the relationship with DDR come about?
John DDR approached us about releasing through Disconnect, he’d already released some awesome bands so we thought it was too good to pass up! He’s helped us out no end and he’s just a top bloke.
How would you describe "The Bigger Noise" then?
Ballsy
What are the best and worst things about being in Radicus?
Best – when a track comes together and it just feels right, getting to hang out with 4 of your best mates, playing live shows to new people and getting to share the stage with some awesome bands.
Worst – is there a bad thing about being in a band? If so we haven’t found any yet.
You seem to have stepped up your touring, internet presence and generally everything recently. How comes?
We’ve been lazy and we know this. We’ve always practised at least once a week and are always writing songs together but it’s been the promotional side that we never got on with. We’re all really dedicated to playing and love to play as many shows as we can get our hands on but the booking of these ……. not so much. In an ideal world we would love it if we could write tunes and play gigs but in order to do this we realised we have to do the promo bit aswel. We have all made a conscious effort to pull our fingers out and work hard at getting our name out there. We’re lucky to be involved with John @ Disconnect, as he helps us a lot and we figured we’d done so little for such a long time it was time to put some effort in.
Of the shows you've been playing around the UK recently, what other bands have stood out for you?
Listen to Darko, The Human Project, Laughing in The Face Of, Counterpunch, Without Fire, our hometown boys We are Fiction and Turn and Run.
Tell us one thing that not many people know about Radicus?
The first song the original Radicus (4 piece with no bass) played live was a cover of Certain Shade of Green by Incubus.
