INTERVIEW: Frank Turner

So I've been far too slack with this recently And seeing my friends (WWSBDSwansea, TMIML) making good progress with their DIY Projects has given me some motivation to at least update this junk. I've been doing a few interviews and reviews, and out of the fear that a lot of the information may be outdated by the time Moving North Zine #1 is printed, i'll stick it all up on here. This entry features an interview that I managed to get with Frank Turner after the played Manchester on his recent tour with Fake Problems and Beans On Toast. (Props to Fake Problems for getting Adam and I into the show!) Here we go, interview with FRANK TURNER

I’ve heard you mention before that you’re interested in taking Crazy Arm on tour with you in March next year. Is this actually happening? I hope so cause their album is immense wouldn’t you say?

Crazy Arm are indeed touring in March with me. They totally rule.

So this is the biggest headline tour you’ve been on yeah? Have you noticed much of a change in the way things are run or is it a familiar feeling for you?

This is a big tour for me, certainly. I have a slightly larger crew and people are doing more stuff for me, mainly because I'm in interviews and sessions pretty much all day at the moment, plus playing a 90 minute set can take it out of you. Things have stepped up a level, definitely. It's very nice actually.

What was your aim or ambition for ‘Poetry of the Deed’, when you finished it did you have a feeling of ‘wow, this is gonna go somewhere’?

Ambition for POTD... As ever, I wanted to be satisfied that I'd made the best record I could given the circumstances, and I was happy with it on that level. It was great working with my live band in the studio, and working with Alex Newport. I try not to have expectations for albums, just to make them as well as I can and then enjoy the good things if and when they happen.

What’s the best thing about touring with Fake Problems?

Best thing about touring with FP is their constant awesomeness.

What’s the worst thing about touring with Fake Problems?

The worst thing is waking up with Texas tattoos on your arm.

You just signed to Epitaph in the states, what the fuck? How did that come about?

Epitaph deal came about pretty organically, they heard my stuff, liked it, and offered a deal. I was very flattered and they're an awesome label to work with, history aside. I couldn't be happier.

this question is an example out an out-of-date question!

I’m going to FEST in 2 weeks time, how did you enjoy your fest experience, any plans to go back?

Fest was good fun last time I was there. I'd love to go back. Nothing booked right now, but who knows..

My brother served you at a cinema in Putney. Are you into movies a lot, favourite?

Yeah I like films. PT Anderson is fucking great. Life Aquatic was amazing. And Big Fish is awesome too.

Finally, tell us something we don’t know about Frank Turner.

Something people don't know.. Um.. I can't drive but I can play the harp.

Cheers for reading this people, I promise that this will be updated more soon! x
